The Old Farm House stoep
This is the original farm house dating back over 100 years we have been told – take a look at the thick walls and wide windowsills – the walls are made of chicken wire, rocks and mud!
The previous owner – Mr. Ralph Rohr – added on the bathroom and kitchen area (in the last 30 – 40 years) and we added on the stoep in 1989 – three years after the Turkstra family moved in in 1986.
When the Turkstra family moved into the Old Farm House, it was the only house on the farm. There was no electricity and lights were gas and paraffin or candles. There was a “donkey boiler” outside the kitchen door where one stoked the fire to get hot water and there was a big cement sink outside on the lawn for washing!
On moving in, a gas geyser took the place of the “donkey boiler” and the stove ran on gas and the fridge on paraffin. The bathroom had an old mauve bath and black tiles on the wall and there were no drains outside – the water ran into the garden! After 3 years of no electricity, things changed in 1989 when Eskom power came to Volmoed. The house was electricified and the stoep area was added and the outside paving was completed.
The house has a special “feel” and has been much prayed in. Each day Morning Prayers would take place at 8.00 am around the kitchen table and we had visitors in the early years washing up in the kitchen sink – even Archbishop Desmond Tutu!
When the Turkstra family moved out after 13 years the Guy family moved in and the bathroom was changed into two and out went the bath and tiles!
Praise God for His provision for the Old Farm House.
